A yearbook layout is prepared on a DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD or DPS

A standard layout is 102 pica x 66 pica

51 pica width
66 pica height
2 pica top margin
3 pica outside margin
4 pica bottom margin
1 pica inside margin

An image placed in the background must be 104 x 68 to bleed properly

A template is an InDesign layout with pre-defined frames for images, text, captions and headlines. It's a lot like a "paint-by-numbers" canvas - greatly simplifying the job of yearbook page creation.

Although you might think all pages would start looking monotonous and identical, it actually allows the PHOTOS and HEADLINES to define the "look" to each individual page, and allows the yearbook student to concentrate on CONTENT rather than having to prepare FORMAT.
